Prevent

Prevent Brief – Design Process

Brainstorming Ideas for MESSAGE & FORMAT

I worked in a team of 3, Myself, Ben and Sarah. In order to start brainstorming a message i suggested we start writing down words that we associate with PREVENT & Radicalisation.

We agreed that the word PREVENT could have negative connotations, so listed words we wanted to connect with our audience – Empathy, Understanding, Connection, Freedom, Prospective.

I then suggested we combine these words into a slogan for the message.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH + WIDER PROSPECTIVE = BETTER CONNECTION

We thought this message would encourage a positive debate for people rather than instructing them what to do to prevent Terrorism. Like the houses of Parliament, they have two sides to help them come to a conclusion.

“A solution is not created by one side alone”

When thinking about symbols we discussed what could show a connection – Hands, People etc.

Sarah then raised that these could create a message which highlights a social/ ethical divide. We then pushed further to see what could symbol an equality on both sides – SCALES.

However as a group discussed they majority thought the hands was a good symbol to fit the brief and furthered the design to include the slogan inside them. They symbolises unity.

Prevent Brief – 100 Ideas – Thoughts

Context: The government requires all education institutions to deliver training on the Prevent campaign. This is the starting point of the government’s anti-terrorism agenda. West Kent College is aware that the posters for Prevent are boring and they have created a competition for all year groups (FE and HE) to deliver an alternative that will catch the interest of the audience.

The audience is the students of West Kent College.

Brief: Work with your classmates to create an interesting design to be an alternative to the current boring or muddling Prevent posters. The winning design will be made and used within the college.

Hint: it does not have to be a poster.

Hint: think carefully about the message and how your design conveys this.

Deliverables: if you can make your design idea by the end of tomorrow (Oct 4th) you should produce it. In any case you must produce a PDF (of no more than two A4 sides) that shows your ideas, or a clear visualisation of them, with notes and a short statement that describes the aim. PDF must be labelled with course name, year group and tutors (TB and SdeB) and a clear project title.

E-Learning task

100 ways you could protest without violence or aggression

WHAT IS?        WHAT IF?       WHAT WOWS?

What i feel about Radicalisation and the PREVENT campaign

Debate is an important element to issues such as Radicalisation. Without Debate, Slavery could well be still in use today.

Although is can be seen as a Taboo subject and people feel different about bringing to light the issue, as seen in history, it takes someone or something to say ‘ENOUGH IS ENOUGH’

The research through the e-learning video gave me a deeper understanding of the issue and how it is very much something that not all people understand or are aware of.

The case studies really make the situation real, and makes me feel a lot of Empathy toward the people who are mistakenly thought to be involved in radicalisation by showing possible signs which are associated with other problems in their lives, such as withdrawal, depression, anger.

What makes something better is connection!

  • Understanding but not always agreeing
  • Have an open perspective
  • You have a right to your own opinion

Art can be one of the best ways to engage with people instead of speaking in force.
